Plum Blossom Numerology (梅花易数) is famous for its low barrier to entry — and its logic is strikingly similar to modern computing: casting is encoding, interpretation is decoding.

Why Plum Blossom is "real-time"

The method encodes "the current state of the world" into a pair of numbers, then maps them onto the 64 hexagrams. Three ways to cast:

• Time casting: Convert the current year, month, day and hour into numbers. Divide by 8 to get the upper trigram, by 8 again for the lower trigram, by 6 for the moving line.
• Number casting: Ask for two random numbers, or use anything you see — a license plate, a page number, a door number.
• Omen casting: Even the first thing you see can become a hexagram — a flying bird, a vessel, a direction.

The logic in three sentences

1. Upper trigram: first number ÷ 8, remainder maps to the eight trigrams (Qian 1, Dui 2, Li 3, Zhen 4, Xun 5, Kan 6, Gen 7, Kun 8).
2. Lower trigram: second number ÷ 8, same remainder logic.
3. Moving line: (a + b) ÷ 6, remainder picks the changing line. Original hexagram + changing hexagram + nuclear hexagram combine into the full reading.

If you can do elementary arithmetic, you can cast in under a minute. That is why it survived a thousand years: no birth data, available anywhere, anytime.
